At the turn of July and August 2019, a small representation of the Girls Cathedral Choir PUELLAE ORANTES participated in the international choir competition in Taiwan, where it achieved spectacular success winning two gold awards - in the category of youth and university choirs and in the category of ethnic music, as well as silver award in the category of sacred music. In addition, the choir received a special prize for the best performed Taiwanese song by a choir from outside of Taiwan.
Choirs from Taiwan, China, South Korea, Macao, the Philippines, Indonesia and Poland participated in the competition. The performances were evaluated by an international jury consisting of composers, conductors, vocalists from the Philippines, Finland, Latvia, Taiwan, Venezuela and Hungary. The success of the "Puellae Orantes" choir is even greater because there were only thirteen girls who competed with mixed choirs in large compositions (from 35 to 50 people). In each category, in accordance with the contest requirements, a compulsory piece by a Taiwanese composer had to be performed. Most of the competition repertoire presented by "Puellae Orantes" were the works of Polish composers, composed or arranged to the order of the choir. The girls sang in Polish, Italian, English, Chinese, Taiwanese and Latin. Polish songs inspired by folklore were most enthusiastically received by the audience, presented in specially made Cracow costumes. It is worth emphasizing that the Tarnów choir was the only European band performing in the category of ethnic music / inspired by folklore. The choir was also selected to play for the Grand Prix of the competition, which took place in the beautiful National Philharmonic in Taipei. The Grand Prix winner was the outstanding Telkom University Choir from Indonesia.
The organizer of TAIPEI INTERNATIONAL CHORAL COMPETITION is the Taipei Philharmonic Foundation, which is the main force promoting choral music in Taiwan. The Taipei International Choir Festival, organized annually by this foundation since 1996, is the largest platform for international cultural exchange in Taiwan and has become one of the most prestigious music festivals in Asia. In 2018, the Foundation decided to set up the TAIPEI International Choir Competition, whose partner is the Taiwan Ministry of Culture.
In addition to unforgettable musical experiences, the choir had the opportunity to see many beautiful places. Taiwan is a very diverse island, full of contrasts. One can visit the crowded, old shopping streets, which have not changed its appearance since the 15th century, Buddhist temples, tea rooms, and at the same time modern business centers. Tropical nature, wonderful fruit, beautiful coastlines and Aboriginal culture, which are the indigenous inhabitants of the island, are also impressive.
