From 12-15.05.2011 The Girls’ Cathedral Choir ‘Puellae Orantes’ participated in the International Choral Contest named after Georgi Dimitrov in Varna.
The Tarnow Choir received the highest rating in the category of youth choirs and aspired to the Grand Prix Varna 2011 as one of the three best choirs of the contest. The Grand Prix was won by the choir Ateneo from the Philipines (Manila) which is the oldest university choir in this country and whose history goes back to 1921. The choir is a multi winner of various international contests which testifies to the rank of the Varna contest.
During the competition, each choir had to present works from different eras, as well as a Bulgarian compulsory track. The “Puellae Orantes” Choir, desiring to promote the Polish culture by performing, among others, works by several Polish composers: Stanisław Moniuszko, Edward Bure, Miłosz Bembinow and Jacek Sykulski.
The vocal quality, interpretation skills and stage image of the band have been highly rated by international jury from Bulgaria, Hungary, Slovenia, Italy, Greece and Ireland. Jury expressed its appreciation to the Choir by the award for the best conductor of the competition, granted to Rev. Władysław Pachota – conductor of “Puellae Orantes”. The choir received many lucrative artistic proposals. The artistic director of the competition – Gancho Ganchev, who is the conductor of the orchestra and choir of the children’s opera in Varna, as well as the main specialist in the Varna Culture Department – proposed the participation of the Tarnów choir in artistic undertakings related to the award of the title of the European Capital of Culture. Lorenzo Donati – an Italian composer who was a member of the Jury, offered the choir cooperation and sending his own compositions to perform by “Puellae Orantes”. A very interesting proposal was given to the choir by John Fitzpatrick – a member of the jury from Ireland. Fitzpatrick is the artistic director of the International Choir Festival in Cork, to participate in which he invited the Tarnów band. The Irishman is also the creator of various musical organizations, a music consultant of the Europa Cantat Federation, and a regular member of the Jury of international competitions in Switzerland, Italy, France, Greece, Hungary, the Netherlands and Bulgaria. The “Puellae Orantes” choir will benefit from an invitation to Ireland in 2013.
